The proverb "you are what you eat" implies a societal acknowledgement of diet's role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. However, recent research has determined food environment to be equally (if not more) influential.

THE OBESITY EPIDEMIC IS HITTING DETROIT HARD.

This site serves to educate about the complex relationship between Detroit's urban food environment and its obesity epidemic. Analysis of food environment models, obesity as a public health problem, and the effect of socioeconomic status on food equity serve as launching points to delve deeper into this issue. Additionally, this interplay will be viewed in context of the historical deterioration and recent gentrification efforts that so strongly define Detroit today.
